A WAKE FOR ACHEBE

Ogbuagu
Today is a valiant revelry
In the home of spirit dancers,
... Where your fretful limbs play the two-sided drum
Of the passing kernel.
Is it not you the brave one of your land
Pugilist in the one of your blood
Where hands who wash pick yam with elders
Go now, dance forth
The music pot shall not shatter that accompanies
Your leg in its measure.
I have thrown away the cocoyam soot
It's broken face steals your feet
From the place of vermins in
The great border.
Agada
Witness the edging of tonight
From the far dozens of cities
Implacable in rising refrains

Tall one
I know this hollow-eyed moment shaking
Down the gentle close on broken
Hearts sorely stingily to blue
Crowd of gathering tears in the land
Will yet become in another eternity a valiant
Revelry lost in the square of spirits
Its igneous harmony risen
By cosmic cords to the serenity
Of a distant unknown

For me, Chinua Achebe was a good man who knew what good thing to do and unequivocally did it.
Dance well, the one we look up to.

  1. Our heart will forever remember this icon; a legendary writer who lived this life. Things have finally fallen apart, death has taken toil on him.
